China - The Sleeping Giant

To the rest of the world it appears like the Chinese press brake industry is sleeping. But nothing could be further from the truth as this rapidly developing country starts to take huge leaps into improving their technology and tapping world markets.

Up to 1999 all press brake original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) were owned by the government. These companies were known as State Owned Enterprises (SOEs). Many of the SOEs shared the same design. Thisthat is the reason why so many Chinese conventional press brakes look the same and, in fact, have the same or very similar model numbers.

In 1999 the Chinese government amended legislation so that press brakes could be built by private enterprise. This changed the press brake landscape significantly. Private enterprise used its flexibility, superior capital and commercial acumen to build the same or substantially similar press brakes more efficiently and at lower prices. Between 1999 and 2005, these OEMs battled supply constraints in keeping up with the burgeoning demand created from the intense Chinese domestic economy. In 2005, the first major pushes were made by a couple of the larger OEMs into the export markets. These exports took the form of both a) manufacturing for international names with re-badged brands and, b) sale of the Chinese OEM's own brand.

Lazer Safe has been prominent in China from 2005 and is now clearly the dominant supplier of both safety PLC (PCSS-F) and operator guarding systems for Chinese press brake OEMs. Chinese OEMs have relied on Lazer Safe's fully integrated technology to assist them in meeting CE and other world standards. The use of Lazer Safe's market leading technology has assisted the Chinese OEMs to design and build world class conventional and CNC press brakes that are starting to make an impact in all world markets.

There are over 30 press brake OEMs in China and the largest is building over 3,500 machines per year. Given the significant growth achieved already over a short period of time, it is not hard to envisage this rapidly emerging country having a significant effect on the world's press brake industry in the near future.
