New system moves one step closer to the perfect guarding solution

It is a fact that all forms of optical machine guarding have some level of negative impact on productivity. Large slow speed zones above the pinch point and material or operator interference with the optical sensors play a big part in reducing machine productivity. In many cases the machine operator may attempt to bypass or tamper with the guarding system in an attempt to increase productivity. This leads to a reduction or elimination of machine safety that can result in serious injury to the operator.

Lazer Safe's philosophy has always been to design guarding systems that offer both operator safety and minimal impact on machine productivity. The ideal guarding system would have zero impact on machine productivity. Through a commitment to continual development and research in the sheet metal industry, Lazer Safe's LZS-005 system moves one step closer to the perfect guarding solution.

The guarding system comprises a laser transmitter and digital camera receiver, which are fitted to the pressing beam at either end of the press brake. The laser transmitter projects a class 1, block shape laser around the punch and the digital camera receiver captures and processes image data from within the laser field.

The LZS-005 features a protective zone that is made up of 2mm horizontal rows. As the tools close to the mute point each 2mm row is progressively muted as the machine decelerates to pressing speed. When the last row is muted the opening between the punch and material is only 2mm (as opposed to 6mm with the LZS-004 dual laser system). The final 2mm of closing before the pinch point is traversed in pressing speed which greatly reduces the distance the tools travel in slow speed and therefore increases productivity.

Other forms of close proximity guarding can only achieve slow speed travel distances of greater than 6mm and in some cases this can be as much as 24mm. This is primarily due to the slower overall response time of the guarding system and associated control system. Through digital image processing and rapid response time the LZS-005 is the only system that can achieve a 2mm mute point and unparalleled levels of safety and machine productivity.

A variety of operating modes can accommodate various shaped work pieces to automatically mute portions of the active sensing zone to allow cycles to be completed in high speed without any unnecessary stopping.

Another area of machine guarding that has been improved is the automatic adjustment feature. Adjustment of the LZS-005 transmitter and receiver has been greatly simplified for the machine operator. The transmitter and receiver are initially set-up during machine commissioning using a set of alignment tools to ensure the laser is parallel with the punch. After a tool change the operator simply adjusts the vertical position of the transmitter so that the laser is overlapping the punch tip. The receiver vertical position is adjusted to line up with the laser and the operator simply presses the TOOL ALIGN button on the receiver. The receiver takes an image of the punch and automatically moves the sensing zone central to the punch tip. Indicators on the receiver show the operator which adjustment is required should the receiver be too far outside the detection zone. This simplifies the adjustment process for the operator and eliminates the need for precise manual adjustment after tool change.
